Gayan Prageeth attempts to document recent events through a cultural and historical lens, looking at the country’s struggles to consolidate an identity on the international stage. Informed by the colonial past and an inherent mistrust of the West, the artist comments on the country’s look towards the East for stability and development. In this exercise of documentation Prageeth expands the perspective taking on a broader regional viewpoint, while refusing to compromise the deeply personal narrative evoked in his artistry. Prageeth oscillates between criticisms and tacit acceptance in his examination of the influences of the foreign, reflecting the mixed state of anxiety and hopefulness present in the minds of many in recent years.
