Chris Rivas: Can you tell me how your bucket series talks about the political history in Sri Lanka and Black July?
Gayan Prageeth: The racial conflict that commenced on July 23, 1983, is commonly known as Black July. During these riots, people from the Tamil community were attacked, often identified by their pronunciation of certain words. In one method, individuals were shown a bucket; Tamils finding it difficult to pronounce “Baldiya” pronounced it as “Waldiya”. Those who pronounced the word as such were suspected to be Tamil and were attacked, often killed.
